Our first stop in Germany was Munich. To be honest, not my favorite city. It was rainy, dreary and quite industrial. But it is rich in history and has some beautiful buildings, and also tons of authentic sausage restaurants (we are in Germany after all...)! We took a tour of the Residenz, and my favorite room by far was the dining room, seen below. We were roaming the streets and came upon a luxury deli, Dallmayr. They had everything from fresh fish, to chocolate and cheese shops, and even had a fountain with live shellfish crawling in it! I wish we had found this place before lunch so we could have enjoyed a meal here.
In the afternoon, we first drove to the memorial site of the Dachau concentration camp, the first under the Nazi regime. They have done a great job of turning it into an educational museum, discussing all aspects of the Holocaust and life at the camp. We walked in following the path that prisoners once took, and automatically chills ran down my spine. The significance of the site and how recently the tragedies occurred is not lost on me.
We next drove to Baden-Baden, a beautiful spa town and had two relaxing days there. The town is small but filled with small chocolate shops on every corner (more on this in a few days!) and has natural spring water flowing through it. We had a Roman bath where we went through a series of 17 stations ranging from saunas, pools, hot baths, massages and scrubs that resulted in "total relaxation" as the spa attendant claimed. It was quite a unique experience! We end in a "resting room" where they wrap you up like a cocoon in a blanket and you drift off to sleep for 30 minutes. Now this is what I call a vacation!
