Sisterhood of the Traveling Chocolate Shops

Hello Chocolate Lovers! My sister Ariana, who has been with me on this trip so far, did the following guest post on a ridiculous chocolate shop we discovered in Dusseldorf:

Anyone who knows myself or my sister knows we have a clear obsession with all things chocolate. Chocolate cake, ice cream, fondant, ganache, the list goes on. I personally could eat chocolate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (I usually do) and live a happy life. So without even trying, the European winds have guided us to various chocolate stores all across Croatia and especially Germany. Even with a bag full of truffles waiting for us at the hotel, we can't resist buying a few more when stumbling upon another new store filled with hazelnut-chocolate nougats, chocolate-dipped orange peels, and Nicole's favorite, chocolate marzipan. During our drive from Dusseldorf to Berlin yesterday, we had quite a full bag of every type of chocolate you could imagine. They mainly came from the shop in Dusseldorf that I equate to heaven - Gut & Gerne Shokolade. A cute store on a sidestreet, you walk by and see that this place is paradise. Walk inside and find not only a bevy of chocolates like pistachio truffles and dark chocolate ganache, but also every thing else that can possibly be mixed with chocolate. Chocolate liquer, jam, fountains, etc. My favorite thing we bought was large bars that look like chocolate fudge but really were blocks of hazelnut nougat that you could just bite into. Our 9 hour drive to Berlin the next day (due to a ridiculous freeway closure) was filled with me eating most of it (and gaining a lot of weight in the process). Connected to the chocolate shop was a little cafe that made you feel like you were sitting on the Seine in Paris. They offered drinks galore, mainly focusing on frappe's, mixed with chocolate in every way you can imagine. For those of you who have met me, you know that I was as close to heaven as I've ever been.

They had a great quote on the wall in the adjoining cafe: "Schokolade ist fassbar, greifbar und vor allem essbar gewordenes. Glücksgefühl." Meaning: Chocolate is tangible, intangible, and especially edible. Happiness!

Deuces,
Ariana
